Understanding Victorian Licence Restrictions

Once you obtain your probationary licence, you’ll need to follow specific P plate rules. According to VicRoads P plate restrictions, probationary drivers must:

P1 (Red P Plates) Restrictions - First 12 Months:

  • Display red P plates at all times when driving
  • Maintain zero blood alcohol concentration (0.00% BAC)
  • Not use mobile phones (including hands-free, Bluetooth, or loudspeaker)
  • Not exceed 90 km/h even in higher speed zones
  • Not tow a trailer
  • Not supervise a learner driver
  • Cannot drive high-powered or modified vehicles
  • Must only carry one peer passenger aged 16-21 between 11pm and 5am (family members exempt)

After P1: Progressing to P2 (Green P Plates)

After 12 months on your P1 licence with a clear record, you’ll automatically progress to P2. The restrictions ease slightly, but most remain in place. Learn more about the full progression pathway at the VicRoads full licence information page.

What Makes Melbourne Driving Unique?

Melbourne has some unique driving challenges that we specifically prepare our students for:

Hook Turns

Melbourne's CBD requires hook turns at certain intersections when turning right. This manoeuvre is unique to Melbourne and often confuses new drivers. We practice hook turns in the city until you're completely confident.

Tram Safety

Sharing the road with trams requires special awareness. You must know when you can and cannot overtake trams, understand tram stop rules, and be aware of tram tracks creating hazards for vehicles. The VicRoads tram safety rules are complex, and we ensure you master them.

Complex Road Networks

From CityLink tolls to multi-lane roundabouts, freeway systems to busy suburban intersections, Melbourne's road network is diverse and sometimes challenging. We expose you to various road types to build comprehensive driving skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

This varies based on your current skill level and confidence. On average, students who've completed their 120 hours need 5-10 professional lessons to refine their technique and prepare for the test format. We'll assess your readiness during your first lesson.

Yes! We offer a test day package that includes use of our dual-control vehicle for your probationary licence test. This is highly recommended as you'll be familiar with the car and have the security of dual controls.

Don't worry - it happens! We offer post-test review lessons where we work on the specific areas that caused difficulty. Most students who fail their first attempt pass on their second try after additional focused instruction.

Yes, all our lessons include pick-up and drop-off from your preferred location across Melbourne. This makes scheduling convenient and maximizes your actual driving time.

Absolutely normal! Many learners feel anxious about independent driving. Our instructors specialize in building confidence through gradual skill development and positive reinforcement. We take the time you need to feel truly ready.

We recommend starting lessons 2-4 weeks before your planned test date. This gives you time to refine your skills without too long a gap between lessons and the test. Contact us as soon as you book your VicRoads appointment.

The L2P Program is a free government initiative connecting eligible young learners (16-21) with volunteer mentors to complete their 120 hours. Our L to P lessons are professional, paid driving instruction focused on test preparation and skill refinement for learners who have already completed their hours and are ready to get their P plates.

Important Road Safety Information

Driving is a privilege that comes with serious responsibilities. As you prepare for your probationary licence, it’s crucial to understand that Victoria has some of the strictest road safety laws in Australia.

Zero Tolerance for Drink Driving

All learner and probationary licence holders must maintain a blood alcohol concentration of 0.00%. This means no alcohol consumption before driving – not even one drink. The penalties for drink driving are severe and can include licence suspension, heavy fines, and even criminal charges. Learn more at the TAC drinking and driving statistics page.

Mobile Phone Use

Learner and P1 licence holders cannot use a mobile phone while driving in any capacity – this includes hands-free, Bluetooth, and loudspeaker functions. The only exception is to call 000 in an emergency. The fine for mobile phone use is significant and comes with demerit points.

Speeding

Young drivers are over-represented in speed-related crashes. Probationary licence holders have a maximum speed limit of 90 km/h (P1) or 100 km/h (P2), regardless of posted limits. We emphasize safe speed management in all our lessons.

Safety First: The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) provides extensive road safety resources and statistics. We encourage all our students to review their materials and understand the risks associated with driving.
