Driving on Your Ls

Congratulations on getting your learner permit! This is an exciting milestone on your journey to becoming a fully licensed driver. At Monikas Driving School, we understand that starting to drive on your Ls can feel overwhelming, so we’re here to guide you through everything you need to know to build your confidence and skills on Melbourne roads.

What You Need Before You Hit the Road

Display Your L Plates Correctly

L plates must be attached to both your front and back windscreens and be visible from at least 20 metres away. You can purchase L plates from most newsagents and retail outlets. If your windows are heavily tinted or you’re concerned about damaging demister lines, you can attach plates to external parts of the vehicle instead.

Your Supervising Driver Requirements

Every time you drive, you must have a supervising driver in the front passenger seat. Your supervisor must hold a full Australian driver’s licence that has been current and valid for at least three years.. This can be a family member, friend, or a professional driving instructor from Monika’s Driving School.

Your supervisor is there to guide you, help you develop safe habits, and keep you confident as you learn. At Monika’s Driving School, our experienced instructors provide patient, professional guidance tailored to Melbourne’s driving conditions.

The 120-Hour Journey

If you’re under 21, you need to complete a minimum of 120 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 20 hours of night driving, before you can progress to your probationary licence. While this might sound like a lot, driving for just two to three hours each week will get you there within a year.

Making the Most of Your Practice Hours

  • Start Simple: Begin in quiet streets and car parks before progressing to busier roads
  • Build Gradually: Work your way up to highways, peak-hour traffic, and complex intersections
  • Vary Your Practice: Drive in different weather conditions, at different times of day, and in various Melbourne suburbs
  • Night Driving: Complete at least 20 hours of night driving to experience reduced visibility and different road conditions

At Monika’s Driving School, we help you maximize every hour by focusing on practical skills and real-world scenarios you’ll encounter on Melbourne roads.

Logging Your Hours

You can track your driving hours using either:

  • myLearners app: Download from the App Store or Google Play for easy digital tracking
  • Paper logbook: Available from VicRoads Customer Service Centres

Make sure you keep your paper logbook even if you use the app, as you’ll need it for verification before your driving test.

Important Rules and Restrictions for Learner Drivers

Mobile Phone Use

Learner drivers cannot use mobile phones in any way while driving, including hands-free, handheld, mounted devices, or any messaging. This restriction helps you focus completely on developing your driving skills.

Blood Alcohol Limit

You must maintain a zero blood alcohol concentration (0.00% BAC) when driving on your Ls. This means no alcohol at all before or while driving.

Speed Restrictions

Learner drivers must not exceed 100 km/h, even in zones where the speed limit is higher. Always drive at a speed appropriate for the conditions and your skill level.

Passengers

While learning, it’s best to start with only your supervising driver in the car. Once you’ve gained more confidence and experience, you can begin driving with additional passengers.

Before You can sit For VicRoads Ps License

If you’re under 21, you must hold your learner permit for a minimum of 12 months continuously before you can take your driving test. Before you’re eligible to sit your VicRoads driving test, you’ll also need to:

  • Complete your 120 hours of supervised driving (if under 21)
  • Hold your Ls for at least 12 months (if under 21)
  • Pass the Hazard Perception Test (you must be at least 17 years and 11 months old)
  • Be at least 18 years old

Note: If you’re over 21, different requirements apply and you don’t need to complete 120 logged hours.

Safe Driving Habits Start Now

The habits you develop on your Ls will stay with you for life. Focus on:

  • Checking mirrors regularly
  • Maintaining safe following distances
  • Communicating your intentions with indicators
  • Being aware of vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians
  • Avoiding driver fatigue by taking regular breaks
